NMEA 2000 is a successor to the NMEA 0183 serial data bus standard. NMEA 2000 devices and J1939 devices can be made to co-exist on the same physical network. It’s subtle indeed, but possibly important to someone who wants to keep part of an N2K network constantly alive on a meager power budget. A few higher-end VHF radios, such as the ICOM M424G, feature a built-in GPS receiver others must be connected to your chart plotter’s GPS using an NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183 network.
